I am going through my diaries from my trips that I have been on. I started in 2011, then had to take a break due to health reasons and returned to missions in 2016.
Here are some stories of my experiences.
2011; LaCeiba, Honduras. We visited the Hogar de Amor orphanage and their Jungle school. We stayed in a rental house, no air, but a beautiful house. In my mind, I thought I would be staying in huts or tents on dirt floors. Our leader, Luis, asked us the question “why are you here?” I had to think about this and see where my heart is at. I learned that I took a lot of things for granted in my life: hot water, clean water, air conditioning, safety, roads, being able to flush toilet paper! One thing that I had to get use to was that the police carry automatic guns. It was intimidating at first and scary.
The days are long. We get up early for breakfast and by the time dinner is done, I am ready for bed. (like 8:30pm!) Our first day, we went and visited the orphanage and the jungle school. The orphanage is currently in a small 3BR, 1BA house with 22 kids! The new building that we will help with is going to be bigger and more rooms! The Jungle school is a private school and the kids from the Hogar go there also. Some of the kids that attend there walk 1-2 hrs to get there every day. School is only in the morning and they get breakfast and lunch. This may be the only meal they get for the day. The school helps teach English as a second language. If they learn English, they will earn more money when they graduate. And if they know about computers, it helps them even more.
I was in charge of keeping track of the craft for the VBS that we will be doing with the kids at the jungle school. It felt like girl scouts in Honduras. Right up my ally!!
I am starting to develop friendships here, little do I know, will still be with me today. I first met Pastor Franklin and his family and Meily this trip.
Bendiciones
